Background of the Study
Mobile communication has revolutionized language use in Nigeria, particularly through SMS messaging. This mode of communication is characterized by brevity and informality, which significantly affects morphosyntactic structures. Nigerian SMS language often features morphological simplification, non-standard syntax, and creative abbreviations, diverging from traditional written language norms (Okeke, 2023). This study examines the effect of mobile communication on morphosyntactic structures in Nigeria by analyzing a corpus of SMS messages. It investigates how digital constraints—such as character limits and rapid exchanges—lead to syntactic adaptations and morphological innovations. The research employs both qualitative and quantitative methods to assess how these changes influence language clarity and user identity. Findings from this study will contribute to our understanding of digital language evolution and inform educational strategies to bridge the gap between informal mobile communication and formal writing conventions (Afolabi, 2024; Chinwe, 2025).

Statement of the Problem
While mobile communication is ubiquitous in Nigeria, its effect on morphosyntactic structures remains underexplored. Existing research has primarily focused on lexical and stylistic features of SMS language, neglecting the systematic syntactic and morphological changes induced by digital messaging (Okeke, 2023). This gap hinders our understanding of how informal communication influences language development and academic writing skills. Without systematic analysis, educators and policymakers cannot design effective strategies to address potential negative impacts on formal language proficiency. This study seeks to fill this gap by examining morphosyntactic trends in Nigerian SMS usage, offering insights into the evolution of digital language (Afolabi, 2024).

Objectives of the Study

  1. To document morphosyntactic features in Nigerian SMS language.
  2. To analyze how mobile communication constraints influence these structures.
  3. To evaluate implications for formal language use.

Research Questions

  1. What morphosyntactic patterns are prevalent in SMS language?
  2. How does mobile communication affect syntactic and morphological structures?
  3. What impact do these changes have on formal writing?

Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it examines the influence of mobile communication on Nigerian morphosyntax, offering valuable insights into digital language evolution. The findings will aid educators, linguists, and policymakers in addressing the challenges posed by informal communication on formal language standards (Okeke, 2023; Chinwe, 2025).

Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study is limited to the analysis of SMS messaging in Nigerian mobile communication.

Definitions of Terms

  • Morphosyntax: The interaction of morphological and syntactic structures.
  • Mobile Communication: Digital messaging via mobile devices.
  • SMS Usage: The informal text-based communication system.
